People call tigers big cats, but they are far from the sweet, cuddly kittens we are used to. Although they belong to the same family, we all know that tigers and cats are completely different.
Janice Haley, a 57-year-old woman living in Orlando, Florida, is raising two Bengal tigers in her backyard. Under her care they are as adorable and cute as a domestic cat.
Haley’s two pets are Saber, a 600-pound male white Bengal tiger, and Janda, a 400-pound orange Bengal tiger. Both of them are fed three times a day and they still love the human mother very much.
In 1995, on the advice of her husband David, Haley decided to quit her job to do a tiger training course. Since then she has always worked with these majestic animals, and she certainly loves her pets very much.
“As far as they’re concerned, I am mommy,” Haley said. “These adorable cats rub me in the face, they’ll let me kiss them on the nose.”
Legally, wild animals shouldn’t be kept in small enclosures, but Haley believes her two tigers would have a better life with her. That they are happy.
“People who consider it cruel to keep them in captivity have a point, to a point,” she admitted. “It is not the ideal place for a wild animal to be, in a cage. But at this point, in the wild, there isn’t a lot hope out there for them anymore, and if there aren’t some of them left in cages there aren’t going to be any left at all in a couple of years from now… They are provided for and loved here. In my opinion, I wouldn’t mind being a tiger in my backyard.”
