People in a small town in England canceled their New Year’s Eve fireworks display. That allowed Thor, the Arctic Walrus, to take a long nap in the harbor.
Huge crowds have flocked to Scarborough after walrus sightings on New Year’s Eve, the BBC reports.
Local wildlife experts have urged people not to hold their shows in a way that would disturb the animal, which is gradually coming up the east coast and coming ashore along various beaches.
The creature, named Thor, was also spotted on the Hampshire coast earlier this month. A New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Scarborough has been canceled due to concerns about Thor.
The council canceled the fireworks display on the advice of British Divers Marine Life Rescue, which said it was causing “disaster” to mammals.
Chris Cook of British Divers Marine Life Rescue said the animal needed to rest and recover before continuing its journey. Hence the show was cancelled.
“I was going down to my boat and there it was on the slipway. Magnificent. It’s got to be half a ton,” said Stuart Ford, who runs the Sealife Safari boat tour in Scarborough. “I think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime, first-time-ever thing in Scarborough to see.”
